Root Music and Faultline Studios decided to team up and do a show with the band once word was out they were coming to town. Previously, Tyler was on the road without his band for a month doing shows with Jeff Beck and keeping busy writing new tunes for the 4 piece. The day after the  Root Music/ Faultline show, Starita and the guys hit the studio to record a new song that the other members of the band had never even heard until they entered the Live room. This obviously was not an issue as the band ripped though an entire day of tracking laying down every part leaving the song only to be mixed. This magical day was fully documented by Volta Videography and will be released on the band’s Root Music Bandpage. Be sure to check their page for the release and catch a glimpse of what life is like in the studio with Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown.

Faultline Friday Is This Week With Recording Guest Valerie Orth!

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

As many of you know, Faultline Fridays has become a great success and this Friday will be no exception! Faultline Fridays is a casual monthly gathering of the musical minds of The Bay Area with the goal to create a greater sense of community in our beloved music scene. We are taking it one step further by bringing in some of the Bay Area’s top artists to perform and be recorded right in front of you. All guests that give their email address will receive a link to download one or more of the live recordings. We are pleased to have Valerie Orth as our debut recording guest THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28th 5-9!

Valerie has been described as “sexy, soulful, genuine, and edgy” by the San Francisco Bay Guardian and an “indie folk powerhouse” by Bend’s Source Weekly, Valerie Orth is a fearless and genre-bending songwriter. Her distinctive hybrid of rock, groove, soul, and folk reaches out and grabs your attention; her live performances captivate and charm at once.

Rich with melody and metaphor, Orth’s tunes move nimbly between darkness and light, hope and despair, taking deft turns of phrase along unforeseen rhythmic twists in the road. With gorgeous, multi-octave vocals and no fear of heights, she flirts with the edge as readily as she subverts expectations.

“Unpredictable and highly original,“ writes the Jefferson Agrarian. “Just when you think she’s going to settle into a familiar groove, off she flies into the stratosphere with phrasings you never saw coming.”

Orth’s dynamic range as a performer is made all the more compelling by what the East Bay Express calls a “completely intuitive composition style.”

Orth grew up, as she puts it, “singing before I could talk.” That penchant led from musical theater productions in her youth to an African diaspora choir at Tufts University. Along the way, she studied drumming and dance in Ghana. But her background is mainly in activism. She campaigned for a women’s studies department at Tufts and organized rallies for fair trade and environmental justice. After graduating, Orth took a job with Green Corps, then moved to San Francisco and became a labor organizer for Global Exchange. She challenged corporate behemoths like Procter & Gamble and led the effort to pass San Francisco’s anti-sweatshop law in 2005.

After a few years of burning the midnight oil on grassroots campaigns that often found her working over 70 hours a week, Valerie decided to return to her musical roots, hopeful that her art might have similar impact to her work in social justice. “Songwriting and performing are basic necessities in my life,” she says. “I couldn’t stand the idea of not singing.”

Her new CD, Faraway City, which the East Bay Express described as “a remarkable piece of work,”features Scott Amendola (Charlie Hunter) on drums, Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls) on piano and organ, and Jon Evans (Tori Amos) on bass and electric guitar. Produced by Evans, it amply displays Valerie’s range as composer, lyricist, and singer.

“I think we went a bit more ‘out-there’ than the regular singer-songwriter genre,” says Orth.

The same can be said of her dynamic live band, which features Veronika Safarova on bass, Eryn Allen on keys, Tyler Lewis on violin and electric guitar, Jeff Marrs on drums, and all of them singing background vocals. Together they have a compelling stage presence, fluid chemistry, and adventurous spirit that continuously gives back to their fans.

This an event not to be missed and be sure to check out Valerie’s new video “Blinding” directed by Dave “Dizmix” Lopez. We hope to see you there!

BURNriverBURN Releases Full-Length Album- Release Party TODAY Friday, Oct. 21st!

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Combining instruments such as harmonica, accordion and keys over a double dose of guitar, bass and percussion, BURNriverBURN is a five-piece with a sound unique within the hard rock genre. In the face of the shear magnitude of their drop-tuned riffs rise the vocals of front man John Paterson who both hearkens back to a time when hard rock was just emerging and blazes a trail for the next generation to follow. Drummer Kevin Amann and bassist Dan Knight take the band through the elevations of each song like a locomotive pulling a train thought a mountain pass while guitarists Chuck Howell and Ray Morgan paint the ever-changing scenery with epic chord progressions, sanguine melodies and incendiary solos.

The name BURNriverBURN, coined by Howell, is a reference to Cleveland, Ohio and it’s infamous burning river the “Cuyahoga” which, due to massive dumping, was accidentally set ablaze several times in the late 60′s prompting the creation of the EPA.

This moniker is also a testament to the seemingly contradictory levels of pride and humility that engender most Clevelanders. Knight and Howell are no exception. Just to the right of Ohio come Amann and Paterson who hail from Jamestown, New York and Philly respectively, while Ray Morgan, an ex-patriot from Tallaght-Dublin, Ireland is the group’s sole import.

BURNriverBURN is a true democracy with all five members contributing to the writing and arrangement of all songs as well as art and print media.

With enough years in the business to hone their skills and temper their egos, the five members of BURNriverBURN spearhead the conspiracy to bring good old hard
Rock-n-roll back to the forefront of modern music…

The record was mastered here at Faultline Studios by Starita and will be released TODAY, OCTOBER 21st at their cd release party. The party will start at 9pm with a $10 dollar cover which includes a copy of the cd and drinks….you can’t beat that!

Faultline Family Member Brice Frillici Drops 7 Records!

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Brice Frillici is an amazingly eccentric and talented San Francisco recording artist who explores every aspect of the word “art”. In addition to playing multiple instruments, Brice records himself, paints, has published books, does woodworking and just about everything else that has to do with creating.
In a fit of sobriety, Brice came to his long time friend and in-house engineer, Starita, to complete his latest monumental feat in the art world…..release 7 records each of which having artwork created by Brice himself. Over the course of several months, they toiled away while laughing, arguing and mixing over 50 songs.
Here’s a little bit from the man himself about his art and this project.

“I am a multi-instrumental DIY recording artist. I love creating cover art and making fun albums. I also love to sing and layer vocal and horn arrangements and explore different styles of song structure, ambiance, lyrical playfulness, genre, ways of recording, methods of inserting meta data into the recordings via strange behavior during taping, inspirational techniques, work-arounds, mistake implementation, improvisation, extraction, mind bending, shape shifting, black magic, intergalactic travel and psychonotic astronomy, past lives, limb regeneration, telepathy as well as ethereal plane and time travel.

Predominantly, I make Lo-fi style-curious alternative homemade fun bedroom type silvery rubbery pop rock adventures with good kick-ins, short shoe gazer jam breaks, fun lyrics, layers and celebration. Or otherwise palatable unhinged psychedelic electric pop with analog turntablist overtones, cut and pasty experimental structures, and wall of sound collage movie soundtrack shape-shifting density scare tactic playfulness. Marginally, I like to explore live basement punk blasts, doom metal drudgery, noisy storytelling party songs, glitchy mess rockers, schizoid rabbit pop, long trains of monotonous tunnel trips, short blasts of forceful piercing omnidirectional fireballs, alien sonic creep, animal fight, long deep dives into endless holes… sometimes it’s all at once.

I am from a very small town in Norther Wisconsin and started recording while attending college in UW Madison circa 1991. My college experience consisted of intense truancy, hedonism, basement jamming and 4-track recordings. Madison was a very creative, inspiring, chilled out, supportive, sexy, trippy, drinking and drugging liberal college town type hub in the mid-west. It cultivated a pretty great band and music scene because of it’s existing basements/free practice spaces and porches/post practice drinking binge locations. An all around great city to find ones own in any musical endeavor. San Francisco however was an undeniable and beckoning cultural and musical force for me and has since proven to be a great musical stomping ground. I been here for years!

I live and record in a six unit building complex in the middle of a super dense neighborhood called the Mission District of San Francisco, California. No sound proofing. I work within my means. I built a deprivation chamber in my home music studio. I go inside it at times and find ideas. The outer part of the chamber is a performance stage. It’s also a kick ass wooden sculpture/sun deck that rests inside a hexagonal bay window. I jump up and play concerts to either my curious cats or the groups of drunken passer-by’s a story below. I have a simple set up with a nice group of instruments and neighbors that don’t call the cops when I’m rocking it. They are supportive I guess, or scared of me.

Since my 2004 release of The Sun Comes In Circles, I have been busy making lots of music and organizing it into separate albums. The different recordings started to find themselves in their own prospective folders which started to form the different albums. It was all happening at once. I did not try to work on these albums congruently, but that is just how it worked. I was making equal progress on each of them and finally realized that they would all be completed at the same time. Then came the artworks and concepts of each, finalizing and firmly differentiating the works. So here you have it. 7 albums of new material. It’s a lot to take in but I need to move on. They are all different albums for different tastes. No matter what, there is a lot to explore and get to know here. I hope you find your songs in these albums and I hope they inspire you”.

Here are the links for you to purchase the records and keep up with the many minds of Brice Frillici.

Grammy Award Winning Dance Band, Los Amigos Invisibles, Hit Faultline!!!

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Los Amigos Invisibles formed in Caracas, Venezuela in the early 1990s as an answer to the lack of variety offered by the “rocker” and dark acts that flooded their city’s theaters and radio waves. Instantly becoming Venezuela’s only “dance band,” they began a crusade to convince the owners of forgotten discothèques that dance is not only salsa and merengue and that electric guitar does not have to be “Punk.” Offering their friends a more enjoyable outlet for partying, Los Amigos Invisibles quickly reinvented the club scene in Caracas. With its original lineup still intact, the band comprises Julio Briceño (a.k.a. “Chulius”, vocals, percussion), José Luis Pardo (a.k.a. “Cheo” or “DJ Afro”, guitar, songwriting), Armando Figueredo (a.k.a. “Odnam”, keyboards), Mauricio Arcas (a.k.a “Maurimix”, congas, percussion), José Rafael Torres (a.k.a “Catire”, bass), and Juan Manuel Roura (a.k.a. “Mamel”, drums, percussion).

In 1995, EMI released their debut album, A Typical and Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band, which was a huge success in their home country, enabling them to sell out clubs around Caracas for the next couple of years. In 1996, David Byrne‘s Luaka Bop record label signed the group after discovering a CD they had planted in a New York City record store. Shortly thereafter, they went into the studio to work on their sophomore record, The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, which was released in 1998 and received accolades from press and musicians alike. Two years later and under the direction of famed producer Philip Steir, they released Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey into Space, which received a Grammy nomination in the category of “Best Latin Alternative Album” and a Latin Grammy in the category of “Best Rock Album.” Following the success of this release, the band relocated to New York City and began work on their masterpiece, The Venezuelan Zinga Son, Vol. 1, produced by “Little” Louie Vega of Masters at Work. Initially, the album was released in the U.K. and Japan through Long Lost Brothers Records, though a year later, Luaka Bop released the album in the U.S., resulting in another Latin Grammy nomination in the category of “Best Alternative Latin Album.”

After ending their contract with Luaka Bop, Los Amigos Invisibles started their own label, Gozadera Records. The first release, Chill Out Venezuela, was a multiple-genre collection of Venezuelan artists, produced by Los Amigos Invisibles. For Gozadera’s next release and the band’s fifth studio album, they enlisted Dimitri from Paris to produce a collection of Venezuelan cover songs entitled, Super Pop Venezuela, which was initially offered in their native country only. In 2006, the album was released in the U.S., landing the band yet another Grammy nomination in the category of “Best Urban Latin Alternative Album.”

After 3 years of anticipation, Los Amigos Invisibles released their groundbreaking album, Commercial, in a joint effort between Gozadera Records and Nacional Records. For this recording, the band took a much different approach to writing. resulting in a more globally appealing album. In an interview with America’s National Public Radio, the band explains that the change in style was not by accident, nor was decision to name the latest project “Commercial”. Rather, it is a tongue-in-cheek reference to band’s former musical self. The release was an instant hit in Venezuela, debuting at #1 on the music charts. During the week of July 7, 2009, their song, “Vivire Para Ti” featuring Natalia Lafourcade, was offered as Single of the Week in the iTunes music store and in November 2009, Commercial won the Latin Grammy in the category of Best Alternative Music Album.

Following their Grammy win, 2010 has been an unprecedented year for the band as their international success has led to major festival appearances and sold out shows throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

On their way through San Francisco on tour, they called up in-house engineer/producer, Starita, to record drum tracks for the highly anticipated upcoming record. Cheo, Mamel, Eduardo and Starita did a whirlwind session just hours before the band hit the stage at The Regency Ballroom for a stellar show. The band continues to push on hitting the Mexico leg of the tour next week.

Check the band’s website for upcoming shows….you’ve never seen any band like these guys!
